Geographical Description & Location of Singapore |
|
Singapore is
strategically located at the southern tip of the Malaysian peninsula
between Malaysia & Indonesia, at the center of popular shipping lanes
between the East, West and Europe. Singapore is among the 20 smallest
countries in the world, with a total land area of only 699.47 sq. km.
Together with Monaco and Hong Kong, Singapore is the among the most densely
populated country in the world, with about 6,489 people per sq. km.
Singapore consists of the main island of Singapore and some 63 islets
within its territorial waters. The main island of Singapore is about 42 km
from east to west and about 14 miles km from north to south. Singapore
terrain is mostly undulating flat country with some low hills peppered all
over the island. The highest point of Singapore is the 164m Bukit Timah
Hill, which is located at the mid-northwest of the main island of Singapore.
Singapore climate is generally hot, sunny, warm and humid due to its
location near the equator. Because of its geographical location and
maritime exposure, Singapore climate is characterised by uniform temperature
and pressure, high humidity and abundant rainfall. Singapore average
temperature is between 23ºC - 35ºC. At night the lowest point is about 23ºC during the rainy
seasons of Nov, Dec, Jan. The highest point is about 35ºC in the hot months
of March - July. Generally, night temperature is about 26-30ºC while day
temperature is about 29-32ºC. Singapore humidity is
relatively high, averaging at 84.3 %.
Singapore is located in a pretty safe zone area. Singapore is not known
to be located in any earthquake zone or typhoon or hurricane zone. The
nearest fault line is about 400 km in Indonesia, however, some buildings may
experience swaying when there is an earthquake in Indonesia. However, as a
safety precaution, please get out of any building quickly if you experienced
some swaying of the building. |
